Application for Electric Service

Anyone desiring to receive electric service from Northwestern Wisconsin Electric Company (NWEC) must make application to the Company before receiving use of the Company's service. The Company reserves the right to require a signed application or written contract in order for electric service to be furnished. Receipt of service, however, shall constitute the receiver a customer of the Company, subject to its rates, rules and regulations, whether service is based upon a signed application, contract or otherwise. All applications and contracts for electric service shall be made in the legal name of the party who will be obligated to pay for the electric service. Commercial accounts must also include name of the business or organization. Subject to its rates, rules and regulations, the Company will continue to supply service until requested to discontinue, and the customer will be responsible for payment of all electric service furnished.

New Electric Service

  1. Each request for new electric service will require a written application.
  2. The applicant may be required to pay NWEC an amount of money as an advance for construction toward the cost of extension of new electric service. This sum (if required) is equal to the excess of the cost for extension of electric service above the amount the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (WPSC) allows the Company to spend to construct the new extension. The amount paid is non-refundable and must be paid in full before actual construction is begun.
  3. Temporary Service for Construction is available on a short-term basis until your permanent service entrance is furnished. The service entrance and wire must be supplied by the applicant or builder and must be approved by the Company before being connected to the Company wires. The Company charges a fee to connect and disconnect the Temporary Service entrance. This charge will be billed with the cost for new extension of electric service and paid before service is connected.
  4. The Company's responsibility is to extend its line only to the applicant's service entrance. Where the customer requests three-phase underground service, the customer shall furnish and install the transformer pad and service conduit and conductors.
  5. The standard electric service offered is 120/240V three (3) wire single phase. Three (3) phase service and other voltages are available. Contact our office regarding your requirements.

Electric Service

Applicant's Responsibility

  1. As a potential customer, you should consult with the Company as early as possible regarding availability of electric service.
  2. In order to receive electric service, you must make written application to the Company, including your planned electrical load.
  3. As an applicant for electric service, you may be requested to furnish, without cost to the Company, Right-of-Way Easements and permits with clearing rights to the Company to clear a defined corridor across your property. An Easement form is provided by the Company.
  4. A proper service entrance and building wiring, as required by the Wisconsin State Electrical Code (WSEC), COMM-16-VOL.2, must be installed.
  5. A Written Statement, signed by your electrician, must also be submitted as provided by the Company.
  6. After your electric service has been connected, as a customer you shall be responsible for all damage done to the Company's equipment on your premises and for all losses resulting from interference or tampering therewith. This includes compensation for any consumed energy not recorded by the meter.
  7. Operation of non-standard equipment or devices which interfere with service to other customers is not permitted.
  8. Electric welders require special wiring. Contact the Company prior to installation for us to make proper modification to your service if needed.
  9. It is the customers responsibility to notify NWE of plans to take advantage of alternate electric rates such as Rw-1, Rw-2, Rg-2 and Fg-2, etc. Only properly sized electric water heaters qualify for the Controlled Water Heating rate (Rw-1). For more information on the use of controlled electric water heaters, contact our business office.
  10. To qualify for our Controlled Space Heating rate(Rw-2), you must have an alternate heating source with fuel stored on site. Contact our business office for more information.
